This is the story of Rosa Jimenez, a young Mexican woman who comes illegally to the U.S. and starts a day care center in her home. When a boy dies accidentally in her care, she is accused of murder and is condemned to 99 years based on circumstantial evidence. The life of a recently arrived young mother is transformed, destroying any possibility of achieving the American Dream. Instead, she now has to live in confinement, separated from her children and forced to survive within the racist and restrictive Texas penitentiary system. Imprisoned in a foreign country, not understanding the judicial process, suffering the separation from her family, and unable to afford a good defense make Rosa’s story a moving and compelling tale about the inequalities of the American Justice system. Winner of several prizes in festivals around the world, including Morelia, Habana, Mexico City (DocsDF), and Argentina (BAFICI). 

 

Es la historia de Rosa Jimenez, una joven mexicana que viene ilegalmente a los EE.UU. y pone una guarderia de ninos en su casa. Cuando muere accidentalmente un nino, es acusada de homicidio y recibe una condena de 99 anos basada en pruebas circunstanciales. La vida de esta joven madre recien llegada se transforma, destruyendo toda posibilidad de alcanzar el sueno americano.  Ahora ella tiene que vivir encarcelada, separada de sus hijos, y forzada a sobrevivir dentro del sistema penitenciario racista y restringido de Tejas. Ser encarcelada en un pais extranjero sin entender el proceso judicial, sufriendo la separacion de su familia y encontrandose sin recursos para una buena defensa, nos ensena que la pobreza, la imposibilidad de hablar ingles pueden terminar en un juicio injusto. Una historia emocionante y convincente de las desigualdades del sistema estadounidense de justicia.  El film ha ganado innumerables premios en festivales por todo el mundo, como Morelia, Habana, Mexico (DocsDF) y Argentina (BAFICI).
