Each September Madrid’s Soto del Real penitentiary holds the “Festival of the Song,” a competition among the best singers from selected prisons. This beautifully executed, intimate documentary follows the stories of eight contestants, four men and four women, from one September’s contest to the next. Compassionate but unflinching, the film journeys both within and outside the prison walls as far as Buenos Aires and Lithuania to follow the remarkable stories of the contestants and the loved ones they’ve left behind. Oscar nominated director Carles Bosch treats his subjects with great care and allows each story to unfold in a deeply human way, not without some unexpected outcomes. Well paced and surprisingly upbeat, Septiembres is a unique and memorable film that began for Bosch as a visit to an incarcerated friend and became a profound reflection on the power of love to go beyond bars and beyond borders.

Este intimo, bellamente construido documental sigue las historias de ocho concursantes, cuatro hombres y cuatro mujeres en cada uno de los eventos que lleva a la gran final. Compasivo pero audaz el film nos sumerge dentro y fuera de los muros de la prision hasta Buenos Aires y Lituania siguiendo las extraordinarias historias de los concursantes y sus afectos. Bosch, nominado para los premios Oscar, trata a sus sujetos con mucho cuidado y permite que cada historia se desarrolle en profundidad, con resultados inesperados. Con un ritmo dinamico, Septiembres es un film original y memorable que comenzo como una visita de Bosch a un amigo encarcelado y culmino como una profunda reflexion sobre el poder del amor que va mas alla de las rejas y las fronteras.
