Described by critics as “Favela-Side Story,” this musical drama mixes Brazilian funk and hip-hop with classical and modern dance to remake Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. As two rival gangs of drug traffickers fight it out, we witness the love between the beautiful Analidia, the daughter of the jailed leader of one of the gangs, and Jonatha,  the childhood friend of the other gang captain. Both study in a dance group located exactly in the middle of the two territories, and with the help of their instructor, the star-crossed lovers hope to use their talents to escape their inevitable destiny. A nod to films as West Side Story, Black Orpheus, and Carlos Saura’s Carmen, the film is a salute to Brazil’s rich history of music and dance, and to the heady mix of art and violence that flows through the alleyways of the Rio’s favelas.

 

Considerada por los criticos como la “Favela-Side Story,” este drama musical mezcla el funk y hip-hop brasilenos con la danza clasica y moderna para recrear Romeo y Julieta de Shakespeare. Mientras dos pandillas rivales de narcotraficantes se pelean, somos testigos del amor entre la bella Analidia, hija del lider encarcelado de una de las pandillas, y Jonatha, el amigo desde la infancia del otro lider. Ambos estudian en un grupo de baile en un taller ubicado exactamente en el medio de los dos territorios, y, con la ayuda de su instructora, los desgraciados amantes esperan usar sus talentos para escapar su destino inevitable. Con influencias de West Side Story, Orfeo Negro y Carmen de Carlos Saura, el film es un homenaje a la rica historia de musica y baile en el Brasil y a la intoxicante mezcla de arte y violencia que fluye por los callejones de las favelas de Rio.
